Applications
NMR reaction monitoring is an excellent technique for determining reaction kinetics as well as reaction end points. The measurements are quantitative with only minimal calibration. The signal has a linear response to concentration and it is generally not sensitive to the matrix. The measurement is of the complete sample and is non-destructive.
There are many techniques available, however many require time consuming sample preparation and complicated instrumentation. NMR spectroscopy could be an invaluable technique for forensic chemists as it is recognized by SWGDRUG as a Category A analytical technique due to the exceptional discriminating power, and NMR is inherently quantitative. Therefore the identity and purity of the sample can be determined from one measurement.
NMR is best known for its use in structure determination. The chemical structure of a small molecule dictates a rational spectrum. This is because the electronic structure, the bedrock of chemistry, is what determines the chemical shift, while the number of nuclei determine the coupling and relative intensities.
Quality control is a constant challenge in food science and technology. The Spinsolve benchtop NMR spectrometer can be used to analyse commercial liquid food samples. It is worth noting that NMR can measure samples that are cloudy, coloured or bubbly, and does not require the traditional sample preparation of other analytical techniques. The samples can be taken straight from their containers and scanned without any further purification, dilution or other treatment.
The Spinsolve benchtop NMR spectrometer can be used to analyse crude oils, fuels and other petrochemical products. This can be used for chemometrics which is important for crude oil combinations and predicting product properties.
